How To Buy The Right Linens For Your Bed

Real Estate Experts article posted on 19 November 2008

At the time that you began to outfit your bedroom you probably thought that your choice for a perfect mattress would be the most difficult decision that you would have to make. How wrong you were, right? The choice of the linens to place on your bed can be a very stressful decision too. The reason is that there are a tremendous number of factors that need to be considered prior to the purchase of those bed linens.

Bedding is certainly not inexpensive and thus, you will need to be sure which bed linens you actually prefer because you will probably not be having a change of mine for quite some time after purchasing the initial set.

Let us look at a few things you may want to consider when purchasing your bed linens:

What Size Are You Looking At?

It’s important to be certain of the size of your mattress and bed before you make a bedding purchase. Pay particular attention to what you’re buying because once you remove the bedding from their packaging, returning them to the store from whence you bought them becomes quite difficult.

Be sure that you have measured your mattress appropriately so that you’ll know, for certain, the size of the sheets you need. Mattresses are made in specific, standard sizes but there is the possibility that there may be a few variances. Don’t just measure the length of the mattress but be sure and get the width distance right too.

Deep pockets will be required for mattresses that have a pillow top. So, if you do indeed have a pillow-top mattress be certain that your sheets have deep pockets or you may go nuts trying to keep the sheets on the bed. If you have a large mattress, the price, naturally, goes up on the bedding so make a decision about the size of the mattress and how important that is to you.

Is the Thread Count Important?

Do you know what the “thread count” is? If not, you should educate yourself before you start shopping for bed linens. The thread count is basically the number of threads in each square inch of the fabric, going both directions in the weave. If the thread count is not prominently displayed on the bedding package, you should either ask the clerk or don’t buy it. This is important information because the higher the thread count, the more expensive the sheet. Also, the more the thread count, the higher the quality and comfort level will be.

How Much Will You Need?

You should always buy more than one set of sheets for your bed. There are several reasons for this, the first being simple practicality. You will need to wash and launder your bed sheets and there may be times when you are not able to wash, dry and replace them in one day. It’s much easier to put a new set of sheets on the bed and launder the old ones at a more convenient time. By rotating your sheets you will also be able to extend the life and use of the sheets.

Are the Color and Style Right for You?

Your entire bedroom theme will depend on the color and style you choose for your bedding. If those elements of the design are not matching, your entire bedroom will look like a disaster area rather than the warm and inviting room you should have designed it to be.

Remember that you should try to create an environment that is both soothing and conducive to rest. You want to feel rejuvenated when using your bedroom for resting purposes so design it accordingly. Don’t choose styling that you won’t like as this is both costly and uncomfortable.

What Materials Is Your Bedding Made From?

The type of fabric that your bedding is constructed of will make a difference in price, comfort and linen life. Cold Winter nights are generally more comfortable with fleece or flannel sheets but during the Summer months either of these fabrics will make you feel like you’re sleeping in an over. Cotton is much more appropriate for Summers in bed. It is much cooler and does not retain heat like flannel or fleece. It’s also much less expensive.

Are you interested in luxury? Then you may want to think about satin or silk bed sheets but again, both are very expensive. Satin, though beautiful is very slick and it has a tendency to hold heat a bit. Not as much as flannel but it’s also not as cool as good old cotton sheeting.

These are a few of the things that you should consider when you are thinking about purchasing the bedding for your sleeping chamber. Know what you’re doing and what you want. Do a little research and you will get what you the right linens at a price you can afford and you’ll be much happier with your purchase.
