Preparing Your Home For Holiday Travel

November 20, 2008

While you are likely very excited about your upcoming plans to travel for the holidays, you need to make sure you take the time to prepare your home as well. Criminals are very aware that people travel for the holidays and they look for homes to target during that period of time. There is a much lower risk of getting caught during this time because so many people are paying attention to their own plans.

Make sure you carefully check all the doors and the windows before you leave for the holidays. They should all be securely locked to prevent someone from slipping into them undetected. If you have an alarm system you want to make sure you set it before you head out. Put fresh batteries is motion lights and outdoor video equipment that you may have installed. Don’t leave extra keys under the mat or other common locations where criminals can easily find them and walk right into your home.

You don’t want your home to appear to be empty when you travel for the holidays. If possible have a friend or neighbor stop by daily. Most criminals stake out homes so if they see different lights on or they see fresh footprints in the snow they will be less likely to target your home.

Either have someone collect your mail and newspapers daily or put them on hold until you return from your holiday travel. Not only is this a dead give away that you are out of town, it can also lead to identity theft. All it takes is for a criminal to get their hands on your bank statement or a credit card statement and they could wipe out your account and charge items that you will have against your credit card.

If you are traveling during the colder part of the year for the holidays, have someone shovel your driveway and sidewalks. This definitely gives the impression that you are home or at least that someone is keeping a very close eye on your home. You also want to set your thermostat at a decent temperature while you are way. The added expense of the heating bill will be nothing compared to the damage from broken pipes that may have froze due to the drop in temperatures while you were traveling for the holidays.

Make sure a friend or a neighbor has a way to contact you in the event of an emergency involving your home while you are away for the holidays. Hopefully they won’t need to contact you but having such measures in place can be very beneficial if an issue does arise. They may be able to take care of low priority issues for you such as the sprinkler system not turning off or someone hitting your mailbox with their vehicle due to sliding on icy roads.

It can be very nice to travel for the holidays, but do all you can in order to ensure your home will be protected while you are away. You don’t want to come home and find that your home has been burglarized or later that your personal information has been compromised. Some planning before you travel for the holidays will help to ensure everything is safe and sound when you return.

Shopping for a Home Fire Alarm

November 20, 2008

Your foremost concern is keeping your family safe. Probably the most fundamental way to see to their safety is to own some sort of residential fire alarm system. Systems can range from a single smoke detector to an elaborate system monitored by a company.

If you’re not sure of what is the best system for your family, then you should look into the different types of home fire alarms. Then you will be able to make an informed decision about the kind that will provide the most protection and work in your budget.

Every Home Must Have a Smoke Detector

At the very minimum, your home fire alarm system should include one or more smoke detectors, depending on the size of the house. Smoke detectors are a small alarm that’s mounted on the ceiling. When the machine detects smoke, the alarm goes off. Many small apartments have only one, but the safest way is to have one to each room.

Smoke detector options include an interconnected system of smoke alarms, in which if one goes off, all the others do as well, and smoke detectors with built in carbon monoxide detectors. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, deadly gas that can be produced by an improperly working furnace.

Although it seems like a good idea to have a smoke alarm in the kitchen, because that is where the majority of home fires start, in reality it is not recommended. This is because smoke can be a usual product of food preparation, burned toast for example, and it is inconvenient to have to respond to these false alarms. The smoke detector placed in the next room will sound if there is a real fire in the kitchen.

Many home smoke detectors use battery power. With battery powered smoke alarms a general rule of thumb is change the battery once a year without fail. One way to remember is to do it on the day we turn the clocks back in fall.

Other smoke detectors are ‘hardwired’, that is connected to the electricity in the house; however, electric smoke alarms do not work when the power is out, just when your family may need them. Another popular option is an electrical smoke alarm with battery back-up, in which case you must still change the battery every year.

Automatic Sprinklers

Many cities and states have laws requiring automatic fire sprinklers in new residential buildings, usually in high density communities. If you are building or remodeling your home, take automatic fire sprinklers into consideration. The cost can certainly be steep, but the savings can be enormous, the lives of your family members and your home and precious keepsakes.

Automatic sprinklers are plumbed into the water system of the house, and will release a forceful spray of water when the temperature at the ceiling reaches a certain level. They can be recessed into the ceiling using white, black or neutral fittings, and will pop out in use.

Fire Extinguishers

It is a good idea for every home to have one or more fire extinguishers within easy reach. That way, when the fire alarm does go off, quick action may prevent a small, contained fire from becoming a large destructive one.

The best kind of fire extinguisher for home use is one that is relatively small (for easier use) and contains a fire extinguishing chemical that can be used on the largest variety of fire types (grease, wood, textiles, etc.). Make sure the instructions are clear and easy to read, and have your extinguisher checked by a certified agency once a year.

Monitored Fire Alarm Systems

The very top of the line is a monitored residential fire alarm system. This is usually installed along with a burglar alarm system. These systems will include remote monitoring from a company that will contact fire and medical authorities in the event of an emergency. A monitored fire alarm system will contain a central control panel that hooks up to several smoke alarms and heat detectors.

Heat detectors are usually more reliable than smoke detectors alone, since they contain more sophisticated mechanics. These all inclusive systems have the additional advantage of being run off the house power with battery backup in the event of a power outage.

The disadvantage to this system is the cost of installation, and the monitoring service does require a small monthly fee. However, if you can make room in the budget for it, the ability to put more sophisticated detectors in some places, such as the kitchen, and the enhanced reliability of outside monitoring are good reasons to purchase such a system.

A Fire Alarm for Deaf People

If you are deaf, or someone in your family is, you know that the world can be a tricky place. There are many situations in which you are not able to hear something like the doorbell or the telephone. One thing that might be over looked, but is very important, is having a fire alarm for the deaf.

The most common kind of fire alarm for the deaf is one that has a very bright flashing strobe that goes off when the fire alarm goes off. When this happens, even if the person is sleeping, the light should wake them up. It needs to be a very bright strobe, and it needs to be located in a place where it will be noticed when it goes off. This can be necessary if you have deaf family members or even friends who visit often.

But whether you go for the less expensive home fire alarm system or for something with extra features, it is vital that you have some sort of residential fire alarm system in the house for the safety of your most precious belongings, your family.

Integrating Photoelectric Sensors Into Your Security System

November 19, 2008

One of the most overlooked components in home security systems is one of the most useful. And, interestingly, it’s actually something that most homes have even if they don’t have security systems. Instead of being used to set off an alarm, it’s used as a safety feature to detect when someone crosses a line, and affects a change in the direction of motion of a quite heavy object.

Still wondering? I’ll tell you: the sensors on your garage door. These little guys sense when someone is underneath your garage door and either stops it or causes it to reverse direction, hopefully before anyone gets trapped or hurt. They’re handy both as a safety switch to keep people from getting hurt, and to keep property from getting damaged.

What they’re called is photoelectric detectors, and they’re one of the most common sensors in all sectors of industry. What could be more simple than a set of sensors that tells you if something has passed between them?

There are a multitude of ways that these gems can be integrated into your home security system. For example, if you have a long driveway, you’re probably interested in knowing if someone has pulled in to it and is headed your way. Both for safety reasons and to give you some warning when your in-laws are dropping by unexpectedly. If you were to integrate two of these sensors at the end of your driveway and wire them in to your panel, you could trigger some sort of response each time you get company.

Another handy way to use them is in an area where there’s a lot of loud noise, and you don’t want to be surprised by someone sneaking up on you. Think about a wood or metal working shop. If you’re performing some precision work on a dangerous machine, the last thing you want to be is startled. A set of these sensors on the entrance can signal you that there’s company on the way so you don’t jump or jerk your arms when you finally notice them.

The uses for these components is almost endless, or at least only bounded by your imagination and needs. Low power sensors can be had for less than one hundred dollars, while higher power ones with visual filtering algorithms will run upwards near three hundred dollars. For the price, you won’t find anything that rounds out your security system more easily.

What Can Security Cameras Do For You And Your Family?

November 13, 2008

As the world continues to get more dangerous, the last thing you want is to bring that danger directly into your home. Newspaper stories tell the tale babysitters abusing children when their parents are off at work.

There have been workers who have been hired in good faith to repair or maintain your property, stealing both from inside and outside the house. Very unfortunate, but the reality is that unless you are vigilant and careful, your family, home and possessions could be hurt by people.

In this article you will learn how security cameras are indeed your help in preventing the inevitable.

The answer is to be diligent and use caution when hiring anyone. Check references, though many previous people don’t or won’t give you all the information due to a fear of being sued by the person. Still, if you ask for references and check them, you have a much greater chance of getting good people.

Let’s be clear that the majority of people are very responsible and trustworthy and all they want is the opportunity to work. That said, there is the very small minority that are the problem and make it more difficult for both the worker and the owner.

Using surveillance cameras is one way to keep better control on your home or business. These little devices are great for placing discretely around your home and office. The reason for using cameras however is twofold.

First, there is the keeping honest people honest idea. This is nothing more than building on the fact that people act differently when they think they’re being watched. Put security cameras in the office and let people know about them and they tend to behave differently.

There’s less of an argument when a customer makes claims against your employee and you need to sort through the information to get to the truth. So this first potential use for surveillance or security cameras is to allow you the potential to see what actually happened.

In at home setting, it’s possible to view how the kids are behaving when the adults are gone. Who comes into and leaves your home when can also be captured. This doesn’t mean that you don’t trust your family or employees, only that by having security cameras around, people will be better behaved.

The Second reason why it’s important to consider a security camera system is to catch bad behavior or illegal activities. By having your home secured with this technology, you are able to easily identify people that shouldn’t be around your home, like would be burglars.

There also is the latest in surveillance camera technology, the nanny cam. This is nothing more than a hidden camera within your home to monitor the behavior of people you leave in charge of your children. Some entertain guests while you’re away and drink heavily while watching television instead of watching the kids. Although most babysitter- nanny types are great, you need to recognize that if the person you leave in charge isn’t responsible, your children could be at risk of being hurt or worse.

Surveillance camera systems have come a long way in the just the last few years. The cameras themselves are getting much smaller and easier to set up. No longer is it necessary to have a specialized security company set up and place a surveillance system in your home or business.

Surveillance cameras now come with a wide variety of options. From capturing color images, motion activated, auto pan and close up functionality from your computer, and even wireless cameras are all available at very attractive pricing.

Everyone should consider the importance of having a security surveillance camera for peace of mind of the family and themselves. Prevention is the greatest thing you can do for your loved ones.

Things To Consider When Buying A Smoke Alarm

November 2, 2008

A small fire in your home can quickly fill your home with noxious smoke. It is important that you choose the right smoke detectors for your home, put them in them correctly, and test them at regular intervals.

Residential smoke detectors come in two types, one is photoelectric, and the other is an ionization detector. In a photoelectric detector a beam of light is aimed into a chamber containing a photocell. Smoke goes into the chamber, which then scatters light, allowing some of the light to reach a photocell and set off the alarm. A smoky fire will normally set off a photoelectric detector sooner than a flaming fire.

Ionization detectors use radiation that ionizes (breaks up) the air inside the unit, and gives it a small electrical charge. Smoke particles reduce this flow of current, and set the device into alarm.

Which type of detector works best? There are advantages and disadvantages to both. A majority of photoelectric units these days are hardwired into your home’s electrical system meaning you will not be protected during a power outage. Units that use ionization normally run on house current and have a battery for backup. They do however have a somewhat higher number of false alarms. The best of both worlds is to use ionization and photoelectric in different areas of your home.

A general rule is to have a minimum of one smoke detector for every level of your home. You should also keep these guidelines in mind:

Do not install smoke detectors close to the kitchen, furnace, garage, or just outside a bathroom door. Do not install smoke detectors in areas where the air circulation is poor, i.e. corners. Attach each detector to the ceiling, or high on a wall about 8 to 10 inches below ceiling level.

Detectors should be tested on a monthly basis. The vast majority of models have a simple button to push that makes this a cinch. some smoke detectors may not have a test button to test them simply light a candle, blow it out and hold the smoking candle about 6 inches below the detector. The smoke should set off the alarm.

Batteries should be replaced annually. An easy to remember dates such as a birthday or the beginning of daylight savings time makes it simple to remember to do this. While replacing the batteries, use a soft brush to clean the inside of the detector and its vents to ensure the unit’s reliability.

Is home safety at the top of your to do list? Smoke detectors are your first line of defense.

What You Should Know About Home Security Systems

October 28, 2008

Years ago, home burglar alarms were only found in homes where people were rich. These days however, the prices have dropped and they are becoming more common with people of average income. A lot of people who invest in home security systems go for the do it yourself types. These systems can be hard wired or wireless. They set off an alarm when an intruder attempts to break in or when they are already sneaking around inside of your home. Ask yourself this question; if you were sleeping would you know if an intruder was inside your home?

There are two main types of burglar security systems - open and closed circuit. Open circuit systems work by alerting you with alarm when the circuit closes. When a window or a door is opened, the circuit is immediately completed and the alarm will go off. Closed circuit systems just the opposite. With closed circuits, when a window or door is opened, the circuit is broken - also setting off the alarm.

Other sophisticated options include motion sensors. Motion sensors detect any type of motion within a certain radius to the sensor. Once they have sensed motion, they send out a signal out to the control panel which will analyze it and determine if it seems suspicious. If the movement is considered suspicious, the system will react with settings that you help set up including informing the propper authorities.

Motion sensor alarms are very common these days, and are a good way to keep your home safe from burglars. They give you peace of mind in knowing that you are protected from those of a criminal mind. You can adjust motions sensors for things such as pets walking around or any other activity that would normally take place with in your home that wouldn’t signify a burglary taking place.

It actually is a good idea to use both motion sensors and magnetic switches with your home security burglar prevention system. Magnetic switches will help protect entry doors and windows while the motion sensors will help to protect your living rooms, hallways and other types of open areas. The combination of the two is a sound decision - and will go a long way in protecting your home.

With the progress of modern technology security cameras are rapidly becoming a home security choice as well. Video cameras can be mounted in very strategic areas throughout your home. They can pick up images and video in home and property areas in which they have been installed. These can be displayed on specific monitors including your personal computers. You can also record the videos as well, making it an ideal choice for anyone who wants to keep a recorded record as well. This can be of tremendous help in securing a conviction of anyone who has unlawfully entered your premises.

You can also utilize the services of a reputable home security company. Most companies will have 24/7 monitoring of your home through remote computers and live security personnel monitoring and overseeing the entire system. If an alarm is set off in your home at anytime, the company will immediately inform the local police or send their own security personnel out to your home. They will also call and inform you. This way, night or day, no matter where you go, your home will always be protected.

Investing your hard earned money in a home security system is a smart investment. As shown there are several different ways to go, depending on your needs. If you’ve been worried about your home and your families safety, along with your personal property, you should make this investment today. It will help give you keep peace of mind and knowledge that you are protected. Even minimal protection does not have to cost that much either, which makes it an even better investment. You shouldn’t hesitate as the sooner you make that investment the sooner you will be protected.

How To Use Dummy Surveillance Cameras

October 25, 2008

As more and more criminals get busted for being caught on camera, more and more home and business owners are putting greater trust in surveillance cameras. In fact, people find them so effective that they’re gone so far as to installing dummy surveillance cameras, confident that their presence alone will work as a deterrent.

How Dummy Surveillance Cameras Work
Dummy surveillance cameras, strictly speaking, do not work. They are only used for show, and in some cases, their presence is indeed sufficient in discouraging unlawful and undesirable activities. Dummy surveillance cameras are cheaper than actual working cameras and given the right type and location, they can be quite effective in keeping a place safe and secure.

Advantages of Using a Dummy Surveillance Camera

It’s affordable.
As mentioned earlier on, dummy surveillance cameras cost less than actual working surveillance cameras, allowing home and business owners to maintain a cheaper security system with reasonable success.

It can be effective.
As long as people can’t get close enough to see the truth for themselves, their presence alone could deter wrongdoers from pushing through with their plans.

Disadvantages of Using a Dummy Surveillance Camera

It lulls people into having a false sense of security.
If your dummy security system has effectively deterred criminal activity for a certain period of time, it could get you to think that you’ve got a fail-proof security system on hand. It could make you forget that your system isn’t really working and that when it’s discovered for when it is then the area you wish to secure is immediately rendered defenseless.

It can be ineffective.
The wrong location and keen observation can easily lead a person to discover the truth about your dummy surveillance cameras. And when that does happen then wrongdoers who have found out the truth will know they probably do whatever they want and you won’t have the means to immediately stop them.

Tips for Setting up a Dummy Surveillance Camera System

Aim for authenticity.
Make it as realistic as possible. Don’t just buy any dummy surveillance camera. Choose the type of model people would immediately know you can afford and one that’s suitable for the area it’s supposed to secure.

Use strategic locations.
Place it where you’d normally position an actual surveillance camera. Make sure, however, It’s also placed where it won’t be of easy reach, far enough so that the truth about its function won’t be discovered.

Consider future needs.
Lastly, don’t forget to take into consideration the type of dummy surveillance camera you will need in case you wish to incorporate it with a working surveillance camera system.

How To Do A Free Reverse Cell Phone Lookup And Is It Even Worth It?

October 22, 2008

Each day more and more people are asking what a free reverse cell phone lookup is and if it’s possible to get one online. Of course it’s possible but it depends on so many factors so it may not be very thorough. On the other hand, it’s free so why not try it?

This search is basically when someone calls you on your cell phone and caller I.D. displays a phone number that you don’t recognize. You want to find out who is calling you so you would do a lookup to find out.

There are many cases that you would want to find out who exactly is calling you. For example, what if you hear your teen speaking to someone things that you don’t approve of and you don’t know the person that belongs to the number that is calling? Or perhaps your spouse has strange phone numbers on his cell phone or someone keeps calling your cell and they hang up. The list goes on and on. The reality is that there are an enormous amount of reasons why you would want to know who is calling you and a reverse cell phone look up can give you that information.

First thing you have to do is to decide what search engine you want to use. There is Google, Yahoo, Ask and a ton of other ones that you can use to begin your search. What happens is that these search engines crawl or move over websites looking for information. When they find it, they gobble it up and spit it out on your results page. That is the easiest way to understand the process.

Another tip when you are doing this type of search is to enter the phone number a certain way. Sometimes using dashes in between the numbers works where other times using periods in between the numbers gives more results. Overall, I believe that the best way to get information that is usable is to put the entire phone number in quotation marks. That tells the search engine that you only want results with the numbers in that exact order. This eliminates a lot of useless results.

If you don’t get any results that gives you information that is useful to you, then you could always find a good and accurate online reverse phone lookup company and they will get you all the information that you desire. Usually, for free, they will check and make sure that the person is found and that there are results for that name. If the name is found then they will, for a small fee, get you the information that you want in a matter of minutes.

Allen Walters is an expert when it comes to a free reverse cell phone lookup. He knows that even with caller I.D. many times we have no idea who is calling us on our cell phones. Learn how to discover who is on the other end of the phone to ensure that you keep yourself, your family and your children safe by doing a reverse cell phone lookup!

Your Brain Is Your Best Self Defense Weapon

October 22, 2008

When you’re under attack, your most prized weapon won’t be your stun gun or your martial art skills. Indeed, what will be able to help you most and get you out of trouble isn’t something you’ve bought or learned but rather, something you have with you all your life: your brain.

Don’t Panic
Panic is arguably your brain’s greatest opponent when you’re under attack. Once panic enters your mind and takes control, you will become unable to protect yourself because panic is making you think that anything you do is futile. If you want to defend yourself against an attack, the first thing you need to do is not to panic and become hysterical.

Stay in Control
It’s alright to be afraid. Fear is a natural reaction and it can even help you become more cautious. It helps you choose between smart and stupid risks. Fear can even prevent dangerous things from happening. Fear commonly acts together with instinct and if your survival instincts are warning you away from something or someone, it’s best to pay attention to them and go the other way.

But fear can also defeat you if, as with panic, you allow it to take over your brain. Fear can render you immobile and make you indecisive at the worst possible moment. If you’re under attack, it’s alright to acknowledge your fear but make sure that you’re able to move and think in spite of it.

Be Flexible
Don’t let ego overpower your common sense. Yes, you have your stun gun with you. Yes, you’re a proud black belter. But if there are options available, options that won’t have to put you in a direct confrontation with your would-be attacker then it’s important to seize such options. Better be safe and silly than sorry and hurt!

Your mind must also be flexible enough to accept what’s happening. Let’s say you’ve taken all the necessary precautions and yet you still find yourself under attack. Accept that and move on. You’ll only put yourself at greater risk denying reality.

Find Out What They Want
It’s important to determine your attacker’s objectives as early as possible. This way, you’ll know if what he’s after is something worth fighting over. Make sure that you don’t make any assumptions as those can get you into further trouble.

Don’t Give Up
Your body obeys your mind and it should never be the other way around. Even if you’re physically hurt, you need to understand that yielding to your attacker will only put you in further pain. Don’t let your brain give up thinking ways to save yourself and you’ll be fine.

TBO-TECH is a company dedicated to help you defend yourself in the time of need. Other than a wide range of pepper sprays, stun guns and batons, the company also provides martial arts weapons, home and personal alarms, hidden safes, spy gear and fun sporting products like slingshots and blowguns.
